Cotswolds Odyssey Barley

An English single malt, something not encountered too often. It is as standard as a whisky can be, and that's not a bad thing in this case. This one is called 2014 Odyssey Barley, and it's made from locally grown barley in the Cotswolds hills in England. Bottled at 46% ABV, with an amber color. On the nose, quite aromatic. Oranges, malted barley, rice, candied oranges; ginger. Candied fruit aroma. Yellow apples. After the first sip, green apples appear, along with hints of honey. On the palate, it's a little dull. Spicy, peppery, red fruits, oranges, and syrup. Aftertaste improves slightly, with a light tobacco note; hay; an overall raw rice sensation. Spicy pepper. Overall, this is a good dram. Perhaps an everyday whisky. Very easy to drink; the higher ABV helps it have clean flavors and aromas, but it's as standard as a whisky can be. 80 out of 100 for a 4-year-old dram, it's a good deal.

Established in 2014, this is the first major distillery in the region's history. They use locally sourced barley, floor malted, and mature the spirit in first-fill ex-Bourbon barrels and seasoned red wine casks. Attended Dramfest 2020. I was very impressed with the quality and fair pricing. It's quite oily and full of flavor.

The nose is floral, with abundant notes of honeysuckle, jasmine, acacia blossom, and honey, alongside a creamy dessert and peach pudding. The palate lives up to expectations, focusing heavily on caramelized dried fruit, caramel, mocha, vanilla, and cinnamon. It's delicious; I'd choose this over dessert.

It's youthful and slightly rough, yet quite pleasant to drink. With 46% ABV, the aroma is rich with vanilla and caramel, while the taste features lemon and spice. The conclusion is extended, bringing back spice and vanilla notes, though it's a tad severe. A small amount of water could potentially mellow it.

Sweet, with butterscotch, richness, a sharp edge, and notes of horse and manure.
