A rather reserved, serious spirit. It begins with aromas of pine and sea spray, followed by subtle caramel notes as it evolves. The taste evokes the sensation of reading old books while sipping lemon cordial (as one might). The finish is long and peppery—suggesting an Islay blend is involved—with a pleasant touch of tannins bringing it to a neat conclusion.

About this bottle
Compass Box released this non-age statement bottling, Rivals, in 2017 as a collaboration with Julio’s Liquors and Astor Wine & Spirits, aiming to showcase cooperative efforts. The blend comprises 61.8% whisky from Macallan and 27.8% from the now-closed Imperial distillery, both aged in first-fill ex-bourbon casks. An additional 8.5% is a Highland malt matured in French oak, and 1.9% is from the Teaninich distillery aged in sherry casks. Production is limited to 690 bottles.
