Reese Easley 3.5

I was quite pleased with this dark, serious-looking whiskey. The flavor is robust, rich, and sweet in all the right ways, and at 55% ABV, it drinks without much perceived proof. I've had many 80 proof whiskeys that felt hotter. I definitely detected the influence of sugar maple, and there were numerous flavors present - some dark fruits, cherry, honey, toasted sugars, and what I believe was the black cherry wood influence. It's not particularly viscous but didn't seem thin, just of average consistency. Whatever process they used with pressure aging involving black cherry barrels and sugar maple staves, it appears to create a very full flavor. It's rich with wood influence, but not barrel char. Most importantly, the flavor comes from wood and new make, with no added colorant or chill filtering according to the label. I enjoyed it neat, but immediately considered using it for Manhattans and Old Fashioneds. However, I don't see it solely as a mixer; most of my bottle will be enjoyed neat. In my opinion, it's superior to many other $40 bottles, and I was fortunate to find mine on sale, prompting me to buy two. I'll likely purchase another. Furthermore, I'm confident this whiskey will handle a little water without falling apart, so I'm eager to experiment with that and discover which flavors become more prominent as the proof decreases. Postscript: My initial tasting was from an open bottle that had aired out, and I liked it a lot. My freshly opened bottle (same batch) is less expressive, but I can tell it will eventually be similar to the sample bottle. I'm not a fan of Cleveland, except for this.
