There are rare moments in life when you witness a grown man weep. One such moment might be when a generally sensible person commits a foolish error, like attempting to transport a bottle of expensive, single cask, fully sherry-matured Japanese whisky to their car. The intention is to move it to storage because their spouse forbids more whisky bottles at home. It seems harmless enough to carry a bottle to your car's trunk. However, this becomes problematic when it's snowing and the driveway is icy and slick. All I can say is that from the approximately half-ounce I managed to salvage from the shattered bottle, this is an absolutely remarkable whisky. It's a single cask Chichibu, created for a Parisian wine company. Single cask Chichibu bottlings are exceedingly rare nowadays, with prices often exceeding $700. As I lay there in the snow, clutching the broken vessel, I decided it was as good a time as any to sample it. An unplanned pour. I can't comment much on the aroma, as I was in shock for about an hour, and my nose was frozen from the cold. However, the taste is incredible. Thick, viscous, and rich. Flavors of cherries and plums. The closest comparison I can make is to a Yamazaki 18, but significantly superior. Notes of anise, allspice, and some cardamom. Here's a lesson, kids: enjoy your fine spirits promptly, because let's be honest...your cognitive abilities decline with age, and you're highly likely to slip on ice while transporting that pricey whisky.
