About this bottle

Château de Briat, established in 1540, is among the oldest armagnac estates, with armagnac production commencing around the 14th century. This Hors d'Âge expression undergoes 12 years of aging in French oak. Typically, armagnac is matured for the initial two to three years in new, toasted oak before being moved to older casks to prevent excessive oak influence. Château de Briat allows its barrels to mature without topping off, enabling direct air contact with the distillate. The blend comprises 75% Baco Blanc (a hybrid grape resistant to phylloxera, derived from the French Folle Blanche and American Noah grapes), 15% Folle Blanche, and 10% Colombard. It is bottled at 44% ABV.

Aroma: butterscotch, peanut, burnt caramel, brown sugar, toffee, coffee, vanilla, black cherry, raisin, plum, dark chocolate, pronounced barrel spice, significant ethanol burn. Taste: sweet peanut, butterscotch, brown sugar, burnt caramel, vanilla, raisin, cherry, chocolate, tannic oak notes, strong alcohol bite, finishing fairly long with notes of dark fruit, burnt sugar, and bitter, tannic oak. The aroma is superb. The taste is good. The primary drawback is that it tastes very young and hot, which is unexpected given the 12-year age statement. This is my first Armagnac; I'm eager to sample more.

The aroma is nutty, reminiscent of peanuts. The palate offers notes of dried plums and vanilla, with a finish that is astringent and dominated by oak. This is my initial experience with armagnacs, and I'm thoroughly enjoying it.
