Catskill The One and Only Buckwheat

Intriguing - the buckwheat imparts a distinct character. I'm not typically a fan of rye whiskeys, and this resembles a robust rye, offering spice and bitterness (though not an astringent kind of bitter). There's also a strong, unidentifiable note on both the nose and palate. It might be a woody note, but it's unlike any wood characteristic I've encountered before. Following a prior observation, I spent time smelling the empty glass. It was remarkable – a blend of caramel and campfire, which is peculiar, as I didn't detect either on the palate. I rated it a 3.5, as it appears to be a well-made whiskey, even if it's not my personal preference due to excessive bitterness. However, I would strongly suggest it to rye enthusiasts.

Initially smells of acetone, then transforms into red candy apple. That red candy apple flavor arrives first before becoming nutty. Intense barrel spices are present throughout, leading to a quite dry finish. After some time, sweetness returns. Notably, despite its low proof, it stings all the way down. If you claimed this was a cheap Tennessee whiskey, I would believe you. However, I anticipated an undrinkable flavor, and it is certainly not that. A welcome surprise.

Somewhat floral and very sugary at the start. Amazingly fragrant. The empty glass smells incredible afterward. Amazing.

I enjoy it! The buckwheat is discernible. It's reminiscent of rye, in terms of being spicy and having a bite.

Perhaps this is the authentic taste of buckwheat whiskey, but I find it awful.

Tastes like baked apples with pastry and caramel notes.
