About this bottle

Cardinal Spirits Barrel Proof Single Barrel Bourbon, featuring a mash bill of 60% corn, 36% rye, and 4% malted barley from regional sources, is aged for a minimum of 5 years in new, charred American oak. It is bottled at cask strength, which varies by batch but is typically around 119 proof. (Note: A different expression with a 75% corn, 21% rye, and 4% malted barley mash bill exists under a green label).

Nose: not much is happening unless you get quite close. For MGP sourced juice, I anticipated a bit more. You can definitely tell this is heavy on rye. Everything fades a little at the end. Acceptable, but many other barrel proofs offer better value for the cost.

I enjoy this. My tasting notes are usually terrible, so take that as you will. It's not overly complicated, but it doesn't lack character. Perhaps a significant amount of leather and tobacco, a fairly long finish, and decent warmth at 116.4 proof.

Ivette Day 4.3

A selection from a special barrel source. The aroma is reminiscent of vanilla extract and oak. Delightful. The flavor is surprisingly good with a lovely vanilla taste. It's quite complex, with perhaps floral hints.

Brooklynn Killian 4.0

Cinnamon upfront with a rye character and a sweet finish. The aroma isn't appealing, but the taste is better.

Al Wharton 3.3

Spicy at the start with a pleasant sweet finish.

Morris Whitley 2.5

Dominant rye character with an oak-influenced finish.
