Bunratty Peated Malt Irish Whiskey

What is this intriguing mystery spirit? The website is gone, and it's definitely not a single malt (as indicated on the front label, contrary to this entry), with no information to distinguish between single grain or blended grain. There are numerous flavor components, and it's uncertain how well they will harmonize; the sweetness from bourbon barrels, the dry, refined taste of virgin oak, and an unspecified amount of peated malt in an even more unknown mash bill seems exceptionally daring. It doesn't necessarily convey a "premium" image, nor does it reflect well on Irish spirits thus far, but it was a gift from a highly esteemed wine and spirits connoisseur, for which I am thankful regardless of the outcome. The color is pale and simple, but closer to gold than a corn-yellow hue. The aroma is led by a smoky peat, but not overwhelmingly so, also allowing notes of sweet corn cereal and a savory maltiness to come through. The alcohol content is slightly higher than anticipated, closer to the mid-90 proof range. Reviewing the cask types, all these barrels are represented and actually blend harmoniously on the nose, generating excitement for what's to come. The flavor presents a medium body, capturing most of the aforementioned notes, though not quite as intense or concentrated. The mouthfeel becomes surprisingly fiery after only a few sips, developing a "chewy" texture that requires slower exploration over time. Bourbon sweetness is more apparent towards the finish, while sherry notes are found in the middle; the virgin oak imparts a drying and polishing effect across the entire palate. Peat smoke is also present throughout, but could be a bit stronger to balance the intense warmth felt along the gum line. Who's to say unexpected contenders can't emerge victorious? After all, Ford demonstrated this with one of their finest Mustangs bearing the same name. Granted, this Irish whiskey is still quite unpolished, suggesting a product heavily focused on commercial appeal, likely blended for ease of production, thus enabling a swift and profitable sale... But, it does taste quite good in the end. The suggested online retail price indicates it is quite affordable, and while I will likely consume a fair amount at home, I don't anticipate seeking it out or purchasing it again, primarily due to its mysterious origins and lack of brand support.

Smooth caramel, banana, cereal, and a strong vanilla presence, followed by subtle sherry notes with some red fruit and almond hints. A trace of peat emerges near the end, completing the experience. This peat touch is suitable for those new to peated spirits or who prefer a mild peat. A very satisfying dram for its cost.

While I enjoy Connemara peated Irish whiskey, this blend of peated and sweet sherry isn't quite hitting the mark for me.

A bit sweeter than I prefer right now. However, if caramel, butterscotch, and sweetness are your thing, this could be ideal for you.
