Bowmore Tempest 10 Year

This is a substantial dram...the nose is complex, with sweet, almost tropical fruit, alongside brine, peat, and floral elements. It's a busy, intricate, and full-bodied aroma. The taste begins with sweetness and fruit, which are immediately overtaken by salt, iodine, and spice. This isn't the right choice for introducing someone to whisky! Firm peat asserts itself in the finish, and the taste lingers for a very long time. Salty licorice and peat are the dominant final impressions. It overwhelms the palate, and I can see it being polarizing. I personally enjoy it neat, but adding water smooths out the presentation and enhances the peat. This is a massive whisky, almost cartoonishly bold. I like it, but it's not my go-to after a long day. A score of 4 stars for the intense experience, or 92.

I received a sample and wasn't expecting much, as I don't really enjoy the standard Bowmore 10. Hits the palate hot and doesn't feel like cask strength is appropriate. Lots of alcohol and a tingly sensation on the tongue. This one truly needs water. The same night I had Lot 40 Cask Strength at 57% and it was excellent as is. This Bowmore requires dilution. With water, you get some fruit and the faintest hint of peat. Much improved with water. Nice to try but I would not purchase.

I have sampled four of the five distinct batches. All are quite enjoyable, although I remember batch #2, if memory serves, as being particularly outstanding and deserving of a top rating.

Melon and spicy prosciutto - truly delightful. Minimal heat or ethanol despite the substantial alcohol content. Genuinely impressed!

I detected slightly more lime than orange. It was a very enjoyable drink. A strong smoky finish, possibly a touch too smoky for my preference.
