I had been looking forward to trying some authentic oude genever for some time. Gin is my go-to for cocktails and warm weather drinks, and as a whiskey enthusiast, this combination sounded ideal. Boomsma's oude genever truly delivers what one might anticipate – a sweet, malt-forward spirit with barrel influence, enhanced by juniper and other botanicals. The scent is light and fruity, with notes of vanilla and oatmeal reminiscent of some favored Speyside single malts. A subtle bitter evergreen undertone is present. I wouldn't typically mix this with tonic and lime; similar to scotch, it's not ideal for cocktails, but it possesses enough character and smoothness for sipping neat. It allows enjoyment of the interplay between sweet, oaky vanilla and bright, fresh evergreen forest aromas. I'm eager for more oude genever to become available; this is a pleasing spirit worth seeking out for the experience and variety it offers.
