Corey Walters 2.3

Nose: Bright citrus notes (orange, tangerine, mandarin) with subtle hints of juniper and pine. Palate: Smooth and rich, initially very delicate with juniper. As it evolves, a touch of white pepper and juniper emerges, but the overall impression is mild. The mouthfeel is quite enjoyable. Finish: Brief. The palate quickly fades to citrus and then vanishes. This gin comes from a new operation in the Sydney area of Rozelle, near the revitalized industrial waterfront. The owners apparently preferred the name Blackwattle to the technical location name of White Bay. We were there recently and encountered one of the owners and distillers, who was offering complimentary tastes. Our initial experience was with this gin, which struck me as somewhat weak. I was surprised when they mentioned they chill-filter it – what the hell? Perhaps they're aiming for a very subtle gin, but it barely held its own with tonic and would likely be completely lost in a negroni. While I want to back a new venture and there are no outright flaws, it's missing personality and in my view falls short of average. "Acceptable": 74/100 (2.25 stars)
