Basil Hayden 10 Year Bourbon

After a very dissatisfying experience with the standard Basil Hayden's, I'm approaching this with an open mind, having heard it's quite similar in age. Nose: Smells like a freshly baked apple pie with notes of dark cherry, black licorice, caramel, black tea, wintergreen, and spearmint. Hints of pumpkin spice and pine, with clove, nutmeg, and abundant oak. It's a rich and distinctive aroma. Fantastic. Palate: Flavors of caramel, gala apple, peanut brittle, black cherry, walnut, and almond. Touches of apricot. Cocoa. Spices like cinnamon, black pepper, nutmeg, clove, and oak. It has a light body. It's a significant downgrade from the nose. While enjoyable on its own, it drinks like a diluted version of other products in the JB Small Batch line, which is accurate. Finish: Notes of apricot, cocoa, clove, nutmeg, black pepper, cinnamon, and oak. It's short to medium in length. This earned a full star more than the standard BH. The aroma is its strongest feature, truly one of the most captivating bourbon scents I've encountered. The rest is decent but not exceptional. I'm giving this a 3.5 because of the nose; otherwise, it would have been about a half-star lower. This appears to be an annual release from Jim Beam. If you're a big fan of the distillery and can get it at a good price, I recommend trying it. Otherwise, don't make a special effort to find it. It's a respectable spirit and a pleasant surprise after the underwhelming standard Basil Hayden's, but not one that requires seeking out.

NOSE: Oak, cocoa, toffee, baking spice, vanilla powder, dried fruit, hazelnuts, and hints of citrus and s'mores. This Basil Hayden’s 10 Years is a notable step up from the standard version, offering a warmer, deeper, and truly delightful aroma. PALATE: Oak, toffee, leather, roasted nuts, cocoa, vanilla powder, dried dark fruit, graham cracker, baking spice, and traces of orange peel and yeastiness. Once again, very pleasant. It possesses a warmth and depth that make it wonderful for casual sipping. FINISH: Medium, with oak, dried fruit, yeast, nuts, and a touch of baking spice fading out, with a slightly biscuity quality.

The nose is gentle, with hints of vanilla and oak. It goes down easily and smoothly, with a sweet finish. The vanilla is more prominent on the palate. I just wish it had a bit more kick; at 40% ABV, a little more proof (perhaps 45%) would have significantly improved it. However, it's an easy sipper, requiring no water or ice. I enjoy Basil Hayden bourbons, and this was the best one I've had.

A very smooth pour. I added three drops of water to see if it would reveal any flavors beyond the neat tasting, but it only made it smoother. I'm not detecting a distinct flavor profile. It's not a bad thing, it might just be my perception. Overall, a very pleasant and enjoyable bourbon to savor while reading a good book.

I found the 10-year offering to be somewhat complex, being both light and full-flavored. Enjoying it on the rocks revealed numerous flavors enhanced by aging, surpassing the regular BH. It features classic flavors like caramel, spice, and an oak finish. It's smooth, delicate, and refined. A true pleasure.

Wonderful. It almost distracts me from the chaotic mess that is my living room after the holidays. A perfect gift from my husband. Notes of caramel and leather with a touch of sweetness. Excellent neat and also superb in an old fashioned with honey simple syrup.
