Barrel House Select Kentucky Straight Bourbon

This is another micro batch bourbon produced in Lexington on a site formerly owned by a major prohibition-era distiller. I haven't visited the distillery yet, despite living in the same neighborhood as one of its owners. Small batch producers often have compelling backstories, but their website offers little information. They highlight their copper pot still and water source, yet curiously transport water from 70 miles away despite being near a spring-fed stream once used by the original distillery. This choice might be part of their narrative. Regarding the bourbon itself, the label simply states 'Kentucky bourbon whiskey.' Its rich color suggests it's four years old, a notion supported by the faint ethanol on the nose. With only three barrels per batch, consistency will vary. The nose is subtle, even after ten minutes of aeration, requiring effort to detect high-rye aromas like nutmeg, caramel, sweet corn, and wet hay. As this is a 'neck pour,' it might develop over the next couple of months. The initial taste strongly asserts its bourbon identity, beginning with caramel and background corn sweetness. It's not exceptionally complex but is satisfying, followed by a moderately long, dry oak finish. Tried at a friend's place, I looked up the price: $41. This exemplifies why I've largely moved away from micro-craft products. It's not bad, but certainly not worth $41, especially when compared to Evan Williams 1783 ($15), which was vastly superior. While I support local producers, I'm skeptical of micro-distillery offerings.

A great daily beverage, if you will. I've enjoyed it neat, and it worked beautifully in a few cocktails thanks to the higher rye content. The low reviews are a bummer. I understand the value aspect, but anything micro costs more. This will be my decanter bourbon for the rest of fall into winter, happily.

An interesting pour. The initial sip felt a little intense upfront. The second tasted better, allowing the flavors to emerge more clearly. It's a spirit best enjoyed for slow sipping.

To my knowledge, only available in Kentucky. Barrel House's entire product line impressed me tremendously.

Excellent spirit. It would absolutely be worth traveling to Lexington to sample this excellent drink.

My experience at the distillery suggests it's a decent bourbon.
