About this bottle

Introduced in late 2015, Ballantine’s Hard Fired utilizes a unique cask charring method distinct from the brand's standard offerings. Mature malt and grain whiskies are selected and blended, then finished in double-charred American oak barrels. These barrels, which were second-fill ex-bourbon casks, undergo a secondary charring process at the cooperage, referred to as "hard firing." The bottling strength is 40% ABV.

Edmund Carbone 2.0

Nose: not overly complex, mildly fragrant with lighter crisp fruits, orchard fruits, sweetness, slightly floral and/or perfume, a hint of spice or cinnamon, and grain notes. Taste: slight fruit, sweetness, but then gets dominated by a hot spicy quality, peppery, spicy note lingers quite a bit, grain notes. If a fiery lingering effect was the goal, they succeeded. It would be much better if that were dialed back some and replaced with a bit more sweetness that stuck around. It might also benefit from some slight peaty smokiness to help balance that spicy quality. A little disappointed with this one.
