I've always enjoyed the Double Oak from Woodford and have purchased it multiple times, which is unusual for me. I had a Master Distiller's version over a year ago that was quite good. So, when I saw bottles of this triple finish on the shelf at my local Total Wine, I was very curious. The price wasn't excessive, and I enjoy red wine, so it was an easy purchase. The aroma was dominated by the brandy barrel and red fruit character. After making my palate water, I took a sip. My taste buds were a bit confused by the complexities. After several sips, I could more clearly identify the flavors. Up front was the grain/corn taste that quickly shifted to hints of leather and dried fruit. Further back, I detected a touch of chocolate and oak. The alcohol content was very smooth, almost an afterthought. I must say, this was a pleasure to drink. Woodford has impressed me again. I'm eagerly anticipating their other special releases.

About this bottle
Master Distiller Elizabeth McCall drew inspiration from prior Woodford Reserve Master's Collection releases for this 2023 bottling. The Woodford Reserve Bourbon underwent maturation in three distinct secondary barrels sourced from California's Sonoma County: Pinot Noir casks, American brandy casks, and bourbon casks that previously held red wine. These finishing barrels were combined to create a unique bourbon blend. It became available at select global retailers starting October 17, 2023, with a suggested retail price of $149.99.

I'm not sure how to classify this, it's not bourbon, but it's a fantastic drink on its own. The roughly 45% ABV certainly helps. It's packed with flavor from those finishes. Superb. The downside is the increasing cost each year, and not just by a small amount; the price jumps are significant. They'll soon be relegated to display pieces on store shelves. It's hard to justify paying $150-$175 for a bottle these days.
What is taking me so long to share this?! This 2023 release from Woodford Reserve, which spent time in Pinot, Brandy, and Red Wine barrels, is apparent right from the aroma and persists through the palate. Loads of fruit flavors emerge, followed by notes of dark chocolate. It's quite intricate. Quite unique. Quite delightful! Happy Bourbon Friday.
The aroma is sweet and grape-like, which makes sense given the Pinot cask. I've never experienced a finish like this before. Four distinct flavors emerge in the mouth during the finish: oak, grape, red fruit, and I definitely taste the brandy. Superb!
Unique finish, you definitely get a hint of red wine going down. Smooth and flavorful. Would recommend for a special pour.
This is likely a hit if you're a fan of red wine. I can't recall a more velvety spirit from beginning to end.
