Untitled Whiskey No. 17

Sampled neat. It's only been open two days, but I brought it to a Bachelor party where it was quickly finished! Barely a third remains. It was more popular than the Old Rip 10 I also brought (among many other bottles). The blend in this is incredible. It combines a 10-year wheated bourbon finished in rum and calvados casks with a 14-year MGP high rye finished in sherry casks. Simply amazing. Unsurprisingly, the nose is complex and varied. I believe the wheated bourbon is the dominant component in the blend, as it's very soft and buttery. The rum influence is also prominent. Notes of maple-covered baked dates and powdered sugar on an elephant ear are present, along with a savory and sweet BBQ rub. The age provides a nice dark foundation without appearing overly oaked. A 14-year MGP can easily become over-oaked, but that's not the case here. The mouthfeel is exceptionally syrupy and rich. Immediately, I detect maple and sherry; the sherry is surprisingly forward and dominant. The mid-palate is very grape-forward, like grape soda, and also reminiscent of root beer. The finish is entirely rum-driven, with dates and a hint of almond. It's also buttery again on the finish. This spirit is a wild ride. I'd liken it to a Cigar Blend jr. The finishing is all over the place. You could put it in a flight of rums, and I likely wouldn't even realize it's bourbon. It strongly reminds me of Foursquare Rum. It's really good, but it never quite reaches the scale of being great.
