About this bottle

Uncle Nearest, a brand established in 2017, honors Nearest Green, the first recorded African-American master distiller. In 2022, the brand introduced its inaugural whiskeys, which were distilled, aged, and bottled by Uncle Nearest, a departure from their previous practice of sourcing. This 1884 Small Batch Premium Whiskey, crafted using the Lincoln County Process, was blended by Victoria Eady Butler, a fifth-generation descendant of Green, whose signature appears on the label.

Caiden Edge 4.0

A distinguished Tennessee Whiskey created using the Lincoln County Process and aged for 4 to 7 years in new American white oak barrels, bottled at 46.5% ABV. It begins with aromas of grains, wood, fruits, flowers, nuts, herbs, and spices. The experience continues with notes of apple juice, pineapple, cherry, nougat, maple syrup, honey, and brown butter, leading to a velvety, dry, medium-length finish with hints of toasted oak, vanilla, white pepper, cedar, orange zest, tobacco petals, cinnamon roll, ginger, nutmeg, and dark chocolate.

Wesley Kimbrough 3.5

NOSE Butterscotch, oak, dried fruit, baking spice, with hints of copper and honey. It's a bright, lively aroma with plenty of fruit notes and just the right amount of oak for balance. PALATE Oak, butterscotch, cocoa, baking spice, leather, dried dark fruit, leather, and some copper and nuts. The palate is considerably richer than the aroma, presenting a more traditional Tennessee Whiskey character. FINISH Medium-long -> Oak, butterscotch, and cocoa fade into baking spice and graham cracker. BALANCE, BODY, and FEEL Well-balanced, medium body, and a warm, smooth sensation.

Review #296 Whiskey Tour of the World 2025 #5 Glass: Glencairn, rested 15 minutes. Color: Light amber. Nose: Brown sugar and sweet cream with hints of dried berries. Palate: Nutmeg, allspice, pie spice. Finish: Moderate duration with moderate warmth. Splash: A subtle almond character emerges. Overall: 8.5/10 - I’ve been eager to sample this, and it met my expectations. The mouthfeel might benefit from more layers, but all elements are executed skillfully. Regardless of the controversy concerning the producer, this is a dependable bourbon.

Misty Evans 3.0

I don't detect much on the nose, perhaps some leather and oak, but little else. The palate, however, is spicy-sweet with a strong peanut flavor. I enjoy peanuts! This is a quality whiskey. I recently tried some Uncle Nearest Straight Rye, and as a Bourbon enthusiast, I must admit the Rye has the edge. I would repurchase the Rye before this one. However, make no mistake, this is good and worth buying.

Corrine Barreto 3.0

Nose: Gentle oak, caramel chews Palate: Sweetness in the form of vanilla and spice, like pepper and baking spices Finish: Short Upon revisiting, my initial assessment remains largely the same. This is an easily sipped whiskey, quite thin, offering basic sweet and spice notes with a straightforward finish. At 93 proof, it's a decent option.

Meaghan Gann 3.8

Sampled neat at the Capital One lounge in Dallas. I was feeling unwell, so unfortunately, my palate wasn't fully functional. I'll need to revisit it. 11/17/25: Tasted at a friend's place (with other friends present). It's like biting into a freshly picked green apple. Very fruit-forward, with notes of caramel, pear, and vanilla. The palate is smooth, with vanilla and all the aromas detected on the nose.
