Tomintoul Single Cask

I appreciate this whisky for many reasons. Firstly, it's known as the gentle one, delivering a smooth, easy experience without the harshness of others. Secondly, I first tried it at a Burns Supper, introduced by a friend's father who worked at the distillery. He selected the 16 YO core edition, which was excellent. The 2005 single cask is quite different; it retains that extreme smoothness but has a powerful cask strength alcohol presence that persists throughout. I find this acceptable and fitting. Nose: Pine needles and vanilla rice pudding with almonds or roasted peanut skins, becoming fruitier over time. Subtle hints of nectarine and peach, alongside lemon zest. Also floral notes. Taste: Quite creamy with lovely sweet, tropical fruits. However, the spiciness (chili heat) from the alcohol, combined with vanilla and mashed banana, is more prominent. A final whiff of menthol. Finish: Lingering notes of anise, pine needles, white pepper, and mango. Once again, the alcohol intensity surprised me, but I've been eager to open this bottle. I'll be enjoying it slowly since it's not the most budget-friendly dram.
