Tomatin 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Cask

Received a complimentary whisky sample from a distinguished single cask release by Tomatin. This spirit originated from cask #43036, laid down in 2008 and bottled in 2020. Only 43 of 299 bottles were produced. The alcohol content stands at 59.7% ABV. On the nose, it initially presents a very sophisticated spongy cake aroma. Hay and a subtle cider note follow, with cake-like scents dominating. Hints of orange and yeast are present, along with lemon. Post-initial taste, the aroma shifted to an ice cream sandwich with wafer. Absolutely delicious. Perfectly creamy cheesecake. Strawberry cheesecake and a lemony spice. The palate is somewhat aggressive and intense. It carries acidity and a slight harshness. Acidic and spicy oranges are noticeable. The finish features notes of tobacco and hay. It was off-putting on the first sip due to its intense alcoholic nature, but became much more standard afterward. Spices include pepper and salt. In summary, this whisky did not impress or display significant complexity. The high ABV, usually something I seek out, proved detrimental here, rendering it too harsh and unappealing. It still managed an overall score of 83. The aromatic profile was its strongest attribute.
