Tobermory 17 Madeira

I'm unsure if I've recently come to appreciate Ledaig and Tobermory, or if they're simply producing exceptional products now. I find these special wine cask maturations very appealing and have begun seeking them out. This is a 17-year-old Tobermory with a Madeira cask finish, bottled at 54.2% ABV, presenting a reddish hue. The initial aroma presents notes of Amaretto liqueur, oranges, almonds, Cointreau, and figs, with a hint of overripe banana, followed by dates and a distinct wine character. After the first taste, coffee and caramel emerge. With the third sip, it becomes quite oaky and woody, reminiscent of tasting sawdust. The palate is incredibly enjoyable, featuring dark fruits like blackberries, raisins, and dates, similar to fig juice or a blackberry drink. There are also Dr. Pepper undertones. The finish is very dry and wine-like, continuing with figs, raisins, and candied fruits, giving the impression of being overwhelmed by too much Christmas cake. It's very pleasant. Overall, it was an outstanding single malt. I'm truly disappointed that these types of releases are so limited; if such single malts were consistently available, the whisky world would be a better place. My rating for this remarkable dram is 95 out of 100.
