Tobermory 11yo "Masters of Magic", by High Spirits

My final review from the incredible "Masters of Magic" series features a rather grandly named spirit: Tobermory. This distillery, located on an island, also crafts a fantastic single malt known as Ledaig. This particular label once again showcases the magnificent Master of all magicians, the very individual who inspired prominent figures today like Copperfield and Chris Angel; none other than the Great Kellar. Kellar, naturally, established a school for aspiring magicians, where they could master impressive feats such as the vanishing princess of Karnak. This label depicts Kellar learning his mystical abilities from a group of imps, purportedly the source of his magical prowess. This is an 11-year-old Tobermory, bottled at 46% ABV. On the nose, there are some striking peat aromas. Think rubber tires, old socks, and something akin to a damp, swampy rainforest. Upon the first sip, I detected notes of yeast, plastic, and water balloons. Wet paint accurately describes an aroma note for this spirit. On the palate, only three distinct notes are delivered effectively: coal, smoke, and cigarettes. Definitely peaty. The aftertaste continues the peat theme: earthy, like ashes, and bonfire smoke. It's not excessively long and has a slightly salty character. Overall, this was the most intensely peaty of the four expressions I sampled, yet also the least complex. I enjoy peaty whiskies and am a fan of Tobermory, but this particular bottling fell short when compared to the other releases I had the pleasure of tasting. My rating for this was a fair 87 out of 100.
