About this bottle

The Macallan Concept Number 1 initiates a new travel retail series from the distillery. This single malt was initially matured in sherry-seasoned oak casks for an undisclosed duration, followed by an equal period in ex-bourbon casks. It became available in select global travel retail locations starting in February 2019.

The packaging is visually stunning, resembling a work of art with surreal, whisky-themed imagery reminiscent of Salvador Dalí. The overall theme centers on the artistry involved in whisky creation. Regarding the whisky itself, bottled at 40% ABV with a tawny hue: The aroma is intricate but unremarkable, featuring notes of toffee, aged orange peel, damp grass, rich dulce de leche, and sawdust. I detect the citrus mentioned on the packaging, particularly a prominent fresh orange scent, and a strong sawdust character. It deviates from the typical Macallan profile, which often shares a similar scent across expressions. After about five minutes, a lemon note emerges. The initial taste is somewhat muted and citrusy, with lemon, herbal notes, ginger, and oak accompanied by a hint of toffee sweetness. It's easily drinkable but disappointingly simplistic. The finish is pleasant, with toffee, oak spice, and sawdust, presenting a very woody sensation and a long-lasting numbing effect on the palate. It doesn't feel like a standard Macallan. I appreciate the attempt at something novel, as I find Macallan often stays within a comfort zone, releasing many merely adequate new expressions. This bottling, while similar in that regard, at least ventures slightly outside the box for the distillery. Rated 84 out of 100. Worth purchasing.

Unfortunately, this was my initial experience with Macallan. I bought it at an airport and have avoided this brand since. It's out of balance and overly sweet.

Jennifer Simmons 1.8

Too young and overly citrusy. It's too sharp and lacks harmony. A disappointing outcome.

Valentina Sherwood 3.5

Abundant flavor.
