Macallan A Night On Earth In Scotland

Considering you've tried at least 80 spirits, you likely already know Macallan is often overpriced. In late 2021, this renowned and costly distillery launched a special bottling for the new year, named "A Night on Earth in Scotland." It's presented in what might be the most stunning packaging ever, designed by Visual Designer Erica Dorn, known for her work with Wes Anderson. The entire concept honors Hogmanay, Scotland's massive New Year's Eve celebration. The spirit itself is bottled at 40% ABV and has a pale amber hue. Initially, the nose offers a great aroma that quickly fades. It presents as a rich vanilla cream, similar to Coffee mate, giving a very dessert-like impression. There are also notes of biscuits and almonds, with a subtle yet pleasant citrus hint. My first taste brought prunes and sawdust, and little else. It's weak; the aroma vanished from the glass within three minutes. On the palate, it's quite thin, like plain water initially. Vanilla, a touch of lemon meringue, and a very faint hint of sulfur appear. A second sip revealed coconut. Quite disappointing. The finish continues the decline. There's orange peel, very tart and quite nice, but it lasts only a moment before disappearing. Meringue is present, but the finish is extremely brief. Overall, this is far too expensive, not due to its price tag, but because it doesn't deliver value. You might find it for around $200-250 and feel tempted to buy, but if you intend to drink it, you may feel you've wasted your money. After tasting it with twenty other individuals who agreed with these observations, I can confidently say the only reasons to purchase this are for collecting or investment, as the liquid itself is unremarkable. Pouring a glass of water from your tap would offer a similar experience. My rating is 71 out of 100. Please, someone, refund me.

The stated proof is inaccurate; my bottle is 43%. The nose is rich with buttery shortbread, biscuits and honey, apple pie, and vanilla pudding. The palate has sugar cookies with vanilla, fresh plums, chocolate orange, and a light spice. The finish is subtle but satisfying, featuring citrus marmalade on buttered biscuits.

The aroma presents buttery biscuit, raisins, and vanilla. The taste offers sweet vanilla like honey with mildly toasted almonds, and fig. The conclusion persists briefly before fading with faint sweet toffee undertones.

I appreciated this as it was an easily drinkable spirit, though not what one typically expects from Macallan. The subdued sherry notes combined with the influence of other casks create a very smooth and pleasant dram.

Quite pleasant, a striking and smooth finish, excellent for sipping, with a strong flavor. Really good; offers solid value for $300.
