Balvenie Triple Cask 16 Year

Nose: Intense, immersive sweet honey, vanilla, and wonderful oak aromas. The oak shows great complexity, with different casks evident, though not distinctly identifiable. It's like wandering through a sherry cellar. [The aroma from the dry glass is sweet heather honey and surprisingly like Highland Park 18]. Palate: Sweet, rich, and fruity. A little spice (allspice, cinnamon), brown sugar, raisins, golden syrup, honey. There's a nice complexity of sweet cider flavors layered over the richer fruit. Finish: Not long, quite short and sweet. This is an immediately appealing whisky with pervasive honey, caramel, and fruit characteristics. Very easy to drink, comforting, and completely accessible. It would be an excellent premium whisky for a friend who is starting to explore spirits, finds typical introductory drams too simple, and desires more complexity, but cannot handle highly peated or maritime flavors, or intense sherry finishes. Conversely, it might be too sweet and cloying for some palates, so a sample tasting before buying a bottle is advised. It costs the same as Balvenie 17 Doublewood but offers a much smoother and more caramel-focused experience. In terms of quality, they are roughly equal, but the 17-year-old's profile might be more engaging for a seasoned palate. I admit I'm quite fond of this one, so my rating is generous. “Very Good”: 86/100 (4 stars)

Nose: After a strong malt opening, vanilla becomes dominant, clearly from the first-fill bourbon casks. This is followed by fruity sweetness, candied citrus, and peach. Taste: A great balance of oak, vanilla, and fruit. The taste is soft, with vanilla being more prominent and providing the alcoholic sensation instead of malt. Finish: It's smooth, with significantly less malt than the nose suggested. Oak dominates initially, then it gradually shifts towards candied lemon peel.

The aroma includes pear, peaches, and honeysuckle. The palate is the highlight of the sip, with honey and oak being prominent. The three distinct oak types provide significant complexity, with the sherry cask having the least impact in my estimation. A truly excellent scotch.

Could a whisky be too heavily influenced by wood? The 16 Balvenie might just be the answer. It's not as refined as I recall nor as pleasant as I had imagined. I am looking forward to the 21, preferably without any first-fill ex-bourbon casks this time.

NOSE: More bourbon character than sherry. PALATE: A bit of fruit and spice, but vanilla and honey are prominent. The finish is slick and smooth. OVERALL: Very approachable and skillfully made, but possibly a conservative option for a connoisseur seeking intense flavor.
