Balvenie Triple Cask 12 Year

Nose: Honey, malt, sweet cereal, some dried red apples and orange peel - reminiscent of a muesli snack bar. Oak notes are present but light, more like sawdust than aged cask. A minty presence emerges as it rests, along with some toffee. The nose doesn't gain significant complexity but is very well-balanced and enjoyable. Palate: A soft arrival and luscious texture, fruity and malty with a touch of gentle spice. It develops calmly with apricot, light honey, a trace of vanilla, and a hint of sweet, weak black tea. It's creamy yet slightly dry. With continued tasting, the oloroso influence becomes apparent, revealing a fundamentally sherried character in the palate and finish, though the wine presence is never overpowering and it's not a sherry bomb. Finish: Medium. Fruity and malty notes fade into a pleasantly sweet aftertaste with subtle hints of warm cinnamon, clove, and orange. This expression is lighter and crisper than the 12-year-old Doublewood and most of the core range. The nose is very pleasant, but the palate is superior and holds the true personality. If you find the Doublewood too heavy on caramel and sweet fruity notes, this might suit your taste better. While an oversimplification, it's not entirely inaccurate to say this is the Doublewood with added oloroso cask maturation. I've never had a disappointing Balvenie, and this very pleasant expression continues that tradition. A 3% higher ABV might be interesting but could make it less approachable for some. At 40% ABV, it doesn't benefit much from water; just add a drop or two if you do, though it's not really necessary. It's fine as it is. My only concern is the price; at 150% the cost of the 12-year-old Doublewood, it's too high for my preference. However, if found on sale, it's a recommended purchase. To paraphrase the late, great John Martyn, "some whiskies are just plain good." "Good": 83/100 (3.5 stars).

Creamy sweet notes of chocolate and caramel, pleasant toffee, melted marshmallow, medium spiciness. Creamy delicate sweetness, chocolate, toffee, toasted marshmallow, light oak and low smoke, a little bitterness that mellows out quickly. Low, sustained oakiness that fades fast. Grape. Red fruits, cream, medium to high spiciness. Malty, slight dryness in the back, but thick creamy grapes and red fruits, sweetness and a balance of salt and bitterness. Oaky, medium to high finish with light peat. Not peppery sweetness, smoky balance. Flavor is smooth, light oiliness, raisins, nuts, caramel. Finish: Wood, light smoke, heat in the back.

Nose: Sweet caramel, brown sugar, and vanilla. Tastes like pancakes with maple syrup. Subtle fruitiness, like lychee with ginger syrup. Palate: Sweet and toasty. Reminiscent of cinnamon buns and vanilla crème brûlée. Ginger is present, along with citrus. Finish: Like peanut brittle and ginger cookies, quite pleasant. It's long and lingering, with notes of nutmeg banana bread for an extended period. Overall: Very nice and complex, though not perfectly balanced. Good for sipping, with a pleasingly long finish.

My last review from the world whisky day tasting event. The Balvenie Triple Cask was enjoyable, but not especially memorable. Presented at 40% abv with a russet muscat color. On the nose: Notes of bananas, caramel, honey, and salt. On the palate: A pleasant spiciness with hints of pepper, chili, and ash. Caramel was also present. The finish was of medium length. Overall, it earned a 75/100, a respectable dram.

The nose is light and floral, with hints of bourbon. It's smooth and even, with subtle grassy notes and some lollipop sweetness, like a white dum dum. Overall, it's very subtle at the moment. It will be interesting to see how the bottle evolves. I believe there's another dimension to this one, but the other variations (Doublewood, Caribbean Cask, American Oak) are currently superior.

A dependable Speyside scotch. It's similar to the classic Doublewood, but with a slightly mustier character. The primary notes detected are malt, mustiness, and red fruit. It's very easy to drink and richer than one might expect for an 80 proof spirit.
