Talisker 2010 Distillers Edition (Bottled 2020)

I haven't been let down by any of the distillery expressions I've sampled, so I was eager to try this 2020 Distiller's Edition. The influence of the wine casks is evident in the deep amber color, making this non-age-statement appear quite mature. The nose is quite pronounced, with salty brine and iodine immediately grabbing attention. It has the character of a dirty martini with extra olives. Overripe stewed fruits dominate the mid-palate, but beneath them, peat and charred smoke are present, integrating everything cohesively as you move away from the glass. The palate begins with lightly charred wood, mirroring the nose's finish. Malted cereal follows, quickly giving way to an unexpected sweetness. However, the experience concludes as swiftly as it began. Insufficient viscosity or alcohol content prevents a more thorough exploration. The finish is brief, featuring smoky, vegetal notes and a touch of wood, but like the palate, it ends too quickly. It's a decent whisky, but its brevity prevents it from being truly great. I received this as a single tasting pour as a gift, so I'm unsure of the retail price, but it seems like it should be a more affordable option from this distillery.

Nose: Heavy malt, apple, and red berries, along with cream, soft cherry, and oak. Considerably less intense than the 10-year expression. Taste: Robust smoke with strong wine characteristics, tasting of burnt grass and hay. The sherry enhances the smokiness. A light, creamy finish with a hint of grapefruit. The aroma becomes more noticeable after the first sip, revealing more almond and cherry notes. The peat recedes into a subtler smokiness, becoming very sweet with notes of toffee and powdered sugar. Adding water brings out the malt and increases sweetness with an almond flavor, pushing the peat towards the end. The 10-year expression offers more malt and fruit on the palate. Frankly, the 10-year is more complex, but its youth makes it too sharp. Diluting it reduces its complexity. This Distiller's Edition smooths out the rough edges. It reminds me of another expression. I need more time with this one, but it's becoming one of my favorites.

I like the 10-year and the Storm, so this was a natural choice. The pricing for this brand seems quite inconsistent. Even within Texas, I observe significant price differences. This distillery's profile is overwhelmingly toffee-like, which I appreciate. It evokes a candy shop comfort that appeals to many, consciously or not. It offers the smoky, malty character of the 10-year enhanced with fruity sweetness. While tasty, I find the finish diminishes the distinctiveness of the 10-year, making it resemble a blended spirit. It's delicious, but not worth the increased cost for me. 87/100

This whisky, aged a decade, shows numerous resemblances to the standard ‘Talisker 10’. This particular bottling offers a fruitier aroma, but the phenols make it somewhat disagreeable to my palate. Fortunately, the flavor profile compensates significantly, providing ample peat and spice to balance the whisky's fruitiness. The conclusion is sweet, peppery, and notably briefer than its 10-year-old counterpart. "Tasty": 3.25 stars | A cut above.

Talisker 10 enhanced with red fruit sweetness. Nose: Bright red raspberries at the forefront, layered with rich saltiness and thoroughly covered in peat smoke. Palate: Good viscosity but a bit thin. Meaty with jammy red fruit, seasoned with freshly ground black pepper. Finish: Medium duration, sweet and hot.
