Taconic Distillery Straight Bourbon Whiskey Finished in Mizunara Casks

It's been a long time since I've been this impressed with a bottle, but I feel compelled to share my enthusiasm. This is a rare occurrence for me. Unlike most of my bottles that remain mostly full, I've gone through a significant portion of this one in just two weeks. Today, after a busy day celebrating my youngest daughter's first birthday, this was my first choice, and I refilled it multiple times. I hope that conveys how much I enjoy it. In summary: Many would consider the proof (107) to be ideal. Despite being a non-age-statement straight bourbon with an undisclosed finishing period in Japanese Mizunara, this whiskey drinks as if it were older than its likely 4-5 years, with a smoothness that makes it disappear quickly. Simultaneously, it has a pleasant spicy rye kick. It's not overly smooth to the point of being dull. I reluctantly reduce points for a lack of complexity, but it compensates with its drinkability, upfront character, and delicious milk chocolate, dark cocoa, and rich cream flavors throughout. It's like a layered chocolate confection, and it improves with each sip – according to someone on their third serving. Nose: chocolate malt, pumpernickel bread, rye bread, a faint hint of alcohol, raisinets, and sweet cream. The aroma is light and subtle, not overpowering when you inhale deeply. Taste: As described above. I'm amazed. Smooth initial flavors of brown sugar and homemade hot cocoa (made by melting real chocolate in milk) with a subtle fruit note (cherry? raisin?) present. The first sip is smooth, creamy, and milk chocolaty, quickly followed by a zesty sensation on the tip of the tongue associated with younger rye. This sensation fades, leaving a sweet, chocolatey creaminess on the back of the palate. Despite some investigation, I cannot determine the type of Mizunara Casks used for the finish – new Mizunara or previously used Japanese whisky casks – but I suspect the latter due to the distinct Japanese character of this spirit. I could say more, but I lack alternative descriptors. With continued tasting, its consistent strengths become more apparent. My final thought is this: much like expertly crafted Japanese items, its beauty lies in its simplicity, and it truly must be experienced to be understood.

MBS PICK **** Nose - Light, herbal, difficult to describe other than Japanese! A hint of fruity brightness, perhaps lychee? Very clean, sweet, and vibrant. Quite enjoyable. Palate - Wow, this is complex with a lot going on. Hints of allspice, leather, and barrel. Finish - The finish continues the profile from the nose, with added cinnamon.

Enjoyed it thoroughly from start to finish, including the feel in the mouth. Flawless.

Wonderful. A strong aroma, but a sweet vanilla finish.
