Color: Christmas sherry. Nose: Abundant nuts -- honey-glazed peanuts and toasted black walnuts. Raisins simmered in cloves and cinnamon, topped with baked plums and figs. Palate: Clearly an Oloroso hogshead. Savory game meats with lingering hints of rich red burgundy. Potent mushrooms sautéed in rich butter. Finish: Hotter than anticipated! Lingering traces of slightly smoky firewood. Bitter, wet coffee grounds. Diluted: Richer and sweeter nose, with significant honey notes and more of that coffee, like a freshly ground light roast. Fruits are very prominent on the palate, as are the sweets -- red berries with dark chocolate. The finish is noticeably mellower, with a red wine-like stickiness and delicious caramel apple.
