Signatory Vintage Caol Ila

I bought this on a whim at ABC, intrigued by its uniqueness in the $65 price range. I've been enjoying it enough over the last five months, with the bottle now about 80% depleted. The pour shows a pale straw color with thin legs. The nose is classic Islay, somewhat subdued, with iodine and seaweed, a touch of peat and ashy smoke, sweet grains, and roasted ham. Overall, it aligns well with the typical Caol Ila profile, echoing Johnnie Walker. I prefer this to the Ardbeg Wee Beastie; it's much more cohesive. The Wee Beastie shares a similar sweetness but lacks integration with its maritime and bonfire elements. Here, the Caol Ila maintains a good balance and has a very silky texture. I found this to be a good whisky for blending with others. It's certainly good neat, but not exceptional. At a comparable price point, I believe Ardbeg 10, Port Charlotte 12, or standard Caol Ila 12 are superior options. This whisky could have been something special if bottled at a slightly higher proof, but as it is, it's a solid scotch for under $70, though it doesn't stand out enough for me to purchase it again.

This Signatory Caol Ila is an exceptional Islay whisky. It delivers an intense and complex tasting experience, where peat smoke blends seamlessly with the fruity and spicy notes from sherry. It's a wise choice for peat whisky enthusiasts who appreciate complexity and strength. Additionally, I find it offers excellent value for money.
