I had higher hopes going in, to be frank. I possess a 2016 bottling. Beyond the peat and brine, the aroma presents ethanol, honeysuckle, and a touch of butter. Positives: I detect Laphroaig, which is pleasing because it introduces medicinal and iodine characteristics from the scent to the taste. Brininess registers on the palate. It's not sharp or piquant, though I wouldn't anticipate that at 86 proof. Overall, the peat and medicinal elements are present, but the smokiness is less pronounced than in other Islay spirits. The texture is thinner than I would like. As it's a peaty Islay spirit, I won't give it a negative score:) Negatives: I also suspect Caol Ila is part of this blend, which, at my current stage of exploration, isn't my preferred dram. I noticed it in the finish, which leaves you with more floral notes rather than the coastal bonfire vibe I typically associate with Islay whiskies. My assessment is speculative and I could be mistaken, but I wouldn't be shocked if Caol Ila was indeed included. Ethanol is apparent initially, which was not a benefit. I'm uncertain if I would purchase a full bottle again, but I will appreciate having this to pour while it lasts.

Aroma of fresh pepper and coffee grounds, with dry, earthy peat and leather notes.
