About this bottle

Royal Lochnagar distillery, situated in Royal Deeside on the Balmoral Castle estate, is near the Scottish home of the British Royal Family. The distillery's name is inspired by Lochnagar Mountain in Scotland's Highlands region. Diageo produces Royal Lochnagar, which is bottled by Cadenhead's, an independent Scottish bottler with 175 years of experience. This single malt Scotch, distilled in 1996 and aged for 19 years in a re-charred sherry butt, was bottled in 2015 at 56.6% ABV.

The Cadenhead selections at Whisky Live NY on Wednesday were among the event's highlights for me, and this bottle was likely the best of the lot. Royal Lochnagar is reportedly a key component of Johnnie Walker Blue, so if you're familiar with that, you'll have an idea of how smooth and opulent this tasted. The high alcohol content was just at the edge of my tolerance but it went down easily—wonderfully rich, honeyed, and full-bodied. A memorable experience.
