Ram's Point Peanut Butter Whiskey

I was given two small sample bottles of this with a rather expensive order from a preferred rare whiskey merchant. Every aspect of these sample bottles suggested I should avoid tasting it straight, but I felt compelled to try it neat. The aroma is reminiscent of peanut brittle vape juice. Specifically, it carries a scent like caramel popcorn combined with rancid peanuts that have been stored for days in a damp piece of cardboard. The smell is entirely unappealing. Attempting to disregard the smell, I proceeded to taste it. This was the first whiskey I ever poured down the drain. Before the overwhelming sensory assault, which is meant to taste like peanut butter, the whiskey itself tastes immature – like very poor quality moonshine. It's intensely bitter and has an astringency that makes one question its legitimacy as a whiskey base. This astringency persists as background noise, overshadowing the truly hideous and overly artificial flavor that dominates the taste. It's salty and musty, with a flavor profile akin to peanuts that have been soaking in some kind of moldy liquid. Honestly, I cannot even finish the sip, as I have no desire to take another one. If you appreciate whiskey, for the sake of everything sacred, do not consume this. It is unequivocally the worst whiskey I have ever encountered. The 0.25-star rating I'm giving it is generous.

This has a stronger peanut butter aroma than Sheep Dog, with a hint of Reese's cup rather than just Butterfinger. The palate is rougher and less refined. It has a richer, though slightly more artificial, caramel note. The flavor is less intricate than Sheep Dog's, but it does taste more like genuine peanut butter. However, there's an artificial quality to this flavor profile that was absent in Sheep Dog. I slightly prefer Sheep Dog for sipping neat. For mixing... I'm uncertain what this would be mixed with, so I can't say. Out of Sheep Dog, 99, and this, Ram's Point offers the richest flavor and tastes most like peanut butter. However, it also tastes the most artificial and somewhat unpleasant. If a cocktail called for peanut butter whiskey, I would likely choose this. Otherwise, I'd probably opt for one of the other two. This leads me to ponder whether cocktails truly require peanut butter whiskey and if anyone would ever drink such a beverage straight. Honestly, I might actually have a small serving of Sheep Dog or 99 Peanut Butter with dessert. It's still significantly better than most of those flavored vodkas, so it's not terrible, but it's not truly great either. I'll rate it an 8 for its enjoyable sweetness and richness, and elevate it to a 9 for its potential in mixed drinks.

I appreciate the richness. However, there's a noticeable alcohol presence and definitely a rubbery quality. It's not particularly good, though it surpasses most flavored vodkas. It offers a more authentic peanut butter taste than Sheep Dog, but it's still not as enjoyable, and the rubber flavor makes it inferior to 99 Peanut Butter as well. I perhaps should have acquired a Skrewball mini for comparison.

I mixed this with creme de cacao and cream soda following an online video and its absolutely fantastic.

Doesn't stand well on its own. Perhaps better suited as a component in a drink.
