Plymouth Sloe Gin

Appearance: Crystal clear, ruby red. Smell: Hints of spice like cloves and cinnamon alongside blackberries, stewed plums, cherries in syrup, and a festive orange ball. Taste and Mouthfeel: Sipping it straight, it's sweet with a tart undertone, reminiscent of red berries dusted with sugar, allowing acidity to surface while being softened by sweetness. With tonic, the fruit becomes livelier and brighter, stepping forward. Citrus and honey notes then emerge. The texture when neat is rich but not viscous. A delightful flavored gin. It's nearly sweet enough to be drunk like a liqueur, but it truly shines as a mixer. The base Plymouth gin is detectable, and the sloe berry character is nicely balanced with the other ingredients. I suggest trying it in a standard G&T with ice and a wedge of lemon or lime, prepared with a good amount of tonic – perhaps 1 part gin to 4 or 6 parts tonic. It might sound odd, but the more you water this down, the more it offers. Give it a go if you doubt me! I haven't used it in seasonal punches yet, but I suspect it would be excellent. It definitely evokes the feeling of a spiced punch, autumnal and comforting. On the nose, there's that plum aroma with "dark" spices like cinnamon and cloves. The taste is quite tart initially, but then the sweetness balances it out. Overall, it's very delicious. I can enjoy it neat on a chilly evening or with ice when it's warmer. This is only the second sloe gin I've sampled, and the previous one (Spirit Works) was tried over a year ago, so direct comparison is difficult. However, the overall flavor profile is certainly similar. At $40, it's a bit pricey, but I could see myself purchasing it again. It certainly fills a specific need for me. I should try some other sloe gins as well.

This is the only sloe gin I've tried, so I lack comparisons, yet it offers a welcome tartness. Mixed one part Plymouth with one part Plymouth Sloe in a Tom Collins, it provided a pleasant taste.

Excellent flavor! It's fruity with a good balance of sweetness and acidity!
