First launched in 2021, Old Elk Cask Finish series reappeared in January 2023 with three new expressions, including the return of this Cognac Cask Finish Bourbon. This bourbon, aged for at least five years, is created using the brand's signature high-malt mash bill, which includes 51% corn, 34% malted barley, and 15% rye. It then undergoes a 10-month finishing period in cognac casks. Bottled at 109.7 proof, it is being re-released to select retailers nationwide starting January 19, 2023, with a suggested retail price of $99.99.

The former cognac cask provides a pleasant bright taste of fine grape, while the whiskey distillate serves as an expressive base, full of character on its own. A moderate-light body with rye spice emerging near the end gives this a vigor and potency. A peculiar smokiness appears at the conclusion, possibly from a more intensely charred American oak barrel.
Nose: peculiar funk I can't quite identify. Smells almost like scotch. Palate: quite thick. Some cognac presence. A bit of spice. Finish: odd, dry. Lingering cognac. Enjoyed it more than anticipated. Not bad, rated 4 on the t8ke scale.
I wouldn't have guessed this was cask strength if it wasn't indicated on the bottle. Rather underwhelming for a cask strength, cognac-finished bourbon.
