Macallan Concept No. 2

It might sound a little blunt, but I appreciate the entire idea behind Macallan Concept No. 2. It appears the whisky maker responsible for this new 2019 expression is also a DJ; and he tried to equate music creation with whisky creation. The outcome is this rather new Macallan with a lovely presentation box and bottle. But is the whisky any good? It actually is. Bottled at 40% ABV, burnished gold color. On the nose, this is NOT your typical Macallan, as no Milky Way or Snickers notes are present. Sawdust is like the primary aroma here. Citrus; clove and ginger. Chocolate but not your typical Macallan Chocolate. Leather; almonds; dried fruit and Mint. The mint note is very pleasant. Actually, the entire aroma is great. A second sip reveals more notes: banana, cantaloupe, vanilla, oranges, baked apples. The empty glass smells like toffee and raisins; and a glass that previously held coca cola. The palate is somewhat unusual. It starts very thin, and it leads you to believe this will be a disappointment, but flavor notes appear in a systematic order a moment later. First a faint Vanilla note, which transforms into lemon flavor surrounded by spices like pepper; then it becomes woody to finally turn into chocolate. It's a sequence of flavors. Not all at once. Aftertaste carries the Macallan character. Long finish: full of sawdust, ginger, and tobacco. Enjoyable. Overall, this is a well-balanced dram, with pleasant aroma and flavors, enjoyable and sufficiently complex. It could be improved, but it manages to earn almost a 4.5-star rating. 89 out of 100.
