Ledaig 19 Oloroso Finish (1998)

Now this is more like it. The balance that was missing in the 18 is very much present in this 19-year-old, available for hand-filling at the Tobermory distillery. Its website doesn't specify the duration of its time in second-fill Oloroso casks or its previous cask type, but I'd assume it was ex-bourbon for the majority of its aging. It's a delightful combination of creaminess, dry sweetness, and a subtle peat, all integrated and presented under a typical sherry cask aroma. It's hard to understand how an extra year of aging mutes the peat compared to its intensity in the 18, but perhaps older whisky is included in this batch. Is there any salinity in the taste, as many detect in Ledaig? Perhaps a trace at the end. The finish is a long blend of light sweetness and soft peat, with a pleasant sour note complementing the smoke at the conclusion. If I could alter one thing, it would be to increase the intensity of everything except the peat to concentrate the flavors and enrich the mouthfeel - a slightly higher ABV version of this could be perfect.

We picked up the small bottle at the Tobermory distillery on Mull after our guided tasting. Quite enjoyable. The peat wasn't overpowering, and there were hints of sweetness. A successful choice.
