Laphroaig 10 Year Cask Strength undergoes a 10-year maturation in used barrels. Unlike the standard 10-year bottling, this version is only barrier filtered, removing just the largest char particles and allowing the whisky's character to remain. Because of this minimal filtration, the whisky may become hazy when water or temperature changes are introduced. Batch 9, released in early 2017, is bottled at 58.1% ABV (116.2 proof).

Brine, toffee, vanilla, cooked apples, citrus, cinnamon, bonfire, asphalt, rubber, berry, tobacco, pepper. It’s more medicinal and smoky on the palate. A truly excellent whisky. I prefer this one to batch 12; it seems to include some oloroso casks, though I had assumed these were all ex-bourbon. Regardless, batch 9 offers more depth than 12, but both are fantastic.
Smoky peat with a rubbery and medicinal quality. After getting used to the peat, bright citrus and honey emerge. The higher alcohol content enhances all these flavors without being too much. It also seems to reveal a toasted marshmallow taste that was not noticed with the standard 10 year.
A complex flavor profile. Peaty, perhaps excessively so. Notes of brine and tobacco. It paired well with a ribeye steak. Adding a splash of water and ice improved it.
I really enjoy any scotch that gives a strong, smoky impression.
