My most recent experience with Lagavulin was during my second visit to the distillery. I went back because I adore Lagavulin and you can never have too much. During this second tour, I had the opportunity to sample an exclusive single malt that might never be available in stores: a 7-year-old, Cask Strength Lagavulin, directly from the cask at 59.6% ABV. The initial aroma is a raw, peaty Lagavulin, which I enjoy. Notes of red fruits, a hint of cotton socks, and acetone are present, along with coconut and earthy peat. Vanilla fondant also comes through. After a few sips, the scent evolved into gooseberries and a pleasant vanilla cream, reminiscent of almonds with vanilla. The palate delivers a pleasing impact. Vanilla is prominent, followed by creamy sweetness and cigarette ash, and black pepper. After the first taste, it reminded me of a spongy vanilla cake and a "Tres leches" dessert. The finish has a nice kick. Tar, an oily texture, and a lovely maritime smokiness are present. Ultimately, this demonstrates the exceptional quality of Lagavulin's spirit. Even at a young age, its unique peaty character is evident. The vanilla notes clearly indicate maturation in ex-bourbon casks, and I sense the distillery is moving towards this style, reducing its sherry influence. This shift would displease me, as I appreciate both sherry and peat. My rating for this wonderful sample is 93 out of 100.

The number 7 is quite impressive, even when compared to the 12. I'm glad this is what I selected.
