Lagavulin 12 year (2014 Special Release)

Smell: Strong, salty smoke with a sharp citrus peel scent, mostly lemon, and an oily undertone. A piercing medicinal aroma is present but clinical, not like seaside iodine or a hospital. After adding water, the aroma mellows, revealing subtle floral fruit notes. Taste: Simultaneously intensely dry and sweet. An initial alcohol sting quickly vanishes with more sips, offering the pleasant jolt of a high-proof spirit distilled slowly. It’s smooth yet zesty, leaving lips tingling akin to mild chili. Flavors include preserved lemons, bitter melon, grapefruit, and sea spray over charcoal. Water softens the taste, making it rounded and sweet, reducing intensity but adding no new spice; the palate becomes full and satisfying. End: Lingering, dry, and somewhat herbal. Water enhances the experience, transforming the finale into a gently sweet citrus event. I had this bottle for some time before finally opening it late last year with the 8 year old for a smoky whisky comparison with some companions. It almost restores my belief in Lagavulin. Imagine watering this down to 40% ABV, infusing it with robust lapsang souchong tea smokiness on the developed palate, and aging it in a sherry cask; it would resemble the Lagavulin 16 year old I recall from the 1990s. Sample it neat initially, then dilute generously (a full teaspoon per dram) and let it rest for 15 minutes. As it evolves, it gains complexity, requiring patience for the released sweet oils to meld with the strong citrus notes. The smoke intensifies and gains body, becoming very enjoyable. Lag12 is also excellent, but this is the all-time great. Great aroma, a strong, earthy palate, and a long-lasting dry finish.

A bit too smoky, tar and salt for my liking, but still somewhat enjoyable.
