Jura Perspective No.01 16 Year Old

Smells of stone fruits (peach, apricot), berries, honey, light malt, and vanilla. Letting it sit brings out some citrus floral notes and herbal aromas (mint, oregano). Adding water didn't change much. Tastes like the aroma; the initial impression is stone fruits, particularly peach, plus orange juice and honey. As it develops, there's a spicy tannic quality and sour orange, with the juice flavor becoming more like marmalade, but the overall character is mild and easy to approach. The texture is soft and creamy when neat, becoming creamier with a little water. Finishes medium. Apricot jam fades into the tannins, leaving a dry, spicy aftertaste. This whisky is the first in the "Perspective" series from Jura Distillery, presented in a more “artisan” style than their usual offerings. It has a respectable age statement, a higher alcohol content than is typical for Jura, and it's free from artificial coloring and chill filtering. All of this is good, but does it ultimately create a superior whisky? Perhaps. The tasting experience is what counts, and this seemed sweeter, fruitier, and creamier than most Jura malts to me. However, I've sampled other Jura expressions that were far more impressive (the old 16 year old, the Prophecy expression, and the excellent 21 year old “Tide” expression, to name three), and as far as I know, all of them were colored and chill-filtered. Still, it's a well-made and nicely presented malt that I would happily drink again, but I don't think I'd bother purchasing a bottle.
