About this bottle

Distilled from 100% rye and aged in used barrels, Highspire is not technically classified as a “rye whiskey.” Winemaker Austin Hope, among those exploring alternative aging methods, conceived of this product. Kindred Distilled Spirits in Kentucky distills the rye, which is then aged by Hope in charred, used wine barrels, supplemented with extra toasted staves. The label indicates "barrel aged less than 4 years," which is somewhat misleading as the aging period is only four months. The Highspire name originates from a Pennsylvania rye brand established around 1823 in the town of Highspire.

Hudson Harding 2.0

A bit harsh. The aroma brings to mind play dough, with a hint of spice and vanilla. The taste is much the same, with additional rye spice emerging. The finish is unexpectedly mellow, though brief. Oak staves were used in the finishing of this whiskey, imparting a superficial impression of age, but lacking the softening or depth that true maturation provides. It could work in mixed drinks, but it's not ideal for sipping straight.
