Glengoyne Legacy Series: Chapter Three

Nose: Potent and with a slight ethanol sting. Lightly floral malt with abundant honey, Danish pastries, and raisins. Spice and tannins, along with cinnamon, are present. Palate: Creamy and tending towards slightly oily. Malty, thick fruit loaf with butter provides a solid foundation. There are the rich, sugary flavors of toffee and spiced pastries, plus the richness of poached pear with cinnamon, ginger, and leathery oak. Finish: Medium. Oily and somewhat dry. Bitter coffee, dry tannic oak, leathery caramel. Spicy (cinnamon, clove?) warmth. After an unremarkable experience with the 12 and 18, the Legacy Three has settled in without making much of an impression. This would have fit better between the 12 and 18; it's definitely the same distillery profile as the 12, with a sherry cask treatment that feels somewhat more rushed than the 18. Looking at the casks used for this Legacy Three, I can't help but feel it's a bit of a mix, using up leftover components. Perhaps a little harsh at 48%, but I'd even say this has more memorable character than the 18 or 12. An interesting dram, but still rather 'meh' in the grand scheme of things.

I had high expectations for this whiskey. It's a bit sharp initially with a significant amount of iso-amyl acetate and ethyl acetate. It opens up to plenty of vanilla and oak, but not much else to my palate. The aftertaste is fruity and apple-like, quite harsh. I don't detect distinct bourbon or sherry barrel influences.

Nose: Potent spiced fruitcake. Rich malt sweetness. Palate: Sweet caramel, cooked orchard fruits, developing peppery heat. Finish: Astringent pear skins. The fruitcake arrives and remains.

Notes of dried fruit, a velvety palate, a touch of heat and a burning sensation at the end. Caramel and oak.
