Glenfiddich 15 Year Our Solera Fifteen

Review #36 - Whisk(e)y #22 Appearance - oily in the glass, with decent legs and an amber color. Aroma - a light, very approachable scent, with minimal alcohol presence, sweetness, honey, vanilla, some underlying spice and malt, fruity notes (apple, pear), and darker sherry-influenced fruits like plums. Taste - sweet and spicy (the spice is very well integrated and warming), with fresh fruit on the initial taste (apples and pears, consistent with the aroma), honey, cinnamon, and a malty finish. The texture is viscous and oily. Finish - medium in length, with cinnamon, a dry oaky woodiness, and some sweetness reappearing in the aftertaste, possibly with more faint sherry notes such as figs, raisins, and dates. Overall, it's a good whisky with well-balanced aromas. It offers more complexity than its younger counterpart, yet the sherry influence isn't as pronounced as I expected, lacking the strong raisin, fig, or date flavors. It's approachable and good, but not as complex as anticipated. It's elegant and smooth. I don't believe it benefits much from added water in terms of complexity; it mellows, the spiciness nearly vanishes, leaving a faint cinnamon note, and the maltiness becomes more prominent. After airing, it becomes even more approachable but slightly diluted and perhaps too smooth, with diminished aromas. Appearance: Golden Amber, thin legs that move from slow to quick. Smell: Immediately aged oak and dark fruits like sugared dates and prunes. Toffee and caramel come next, with vanilla on the finish. Demerara sugar and spice, such as cloves. Taste: Flavorful oak; sweet. Dark chocolate hits the back of the throat and goes into the nose. Faint cinnamon and cloves complete the drink. Long finish and great body; a leathery and slick conclusion. Smooth Reduced Smell: Holding the dram downward and vertically below the nose and swirling releases an aroma reminiscent of a buttery carrot muffin. Much more vanilla emerges. Reduced Taste: Lots of great vanilla and an extremely light acidity flow through. Warm and spicy. Upon opening the bottle, I was not impressed. However, sitting with this dram for a good 45 minutes really helped me to understand it better. This is a great dram and it's very balanced. I underestimated it; once again, a great dram doesn't have to be a unique dram!

I received a bottle of this to celebrate the birth of my child. It's initially reserved, but opens up with time. As it develops, salted caramel becomes the dominant note. With continued aeration, I detect peach candy, star anise, honeyed barley, and a cinnamon yeast donut aroma. The palate reveals more caramel, hints of lemon cheesecake and dried strawberries, and an overly sweet grape soda note. Overall, the palate is gentle and sweetly malty. Up to this point, the dram is perfectly fine, even pleasant. However, the finish feels unpolished. The alcohol seems disconnected from the nose and palate flavors. More caramel, warming pipe tobacco, canned pineapple, and menthol appear in the finish, but they don't blend harmoniously. Despite its price point not suggesting it, this single malt is merely adequate; it can be enjoyed casually, but doesn't warrant deep contemplation.

The aroma presents fermented fruit – a very sweet orange residue, rose hips, and apricots, along with dark dried fruit, sloe, and Christmas spices. The taste mirrors the aroma perfectly – resembling Christmas cake, candied fruit, and dried dark fruit. This whisky lacks overall complexity. The absence of flavor development and layering was quite disappointing. It's excessively sweet. It's simply not to my personal taste; I have no other explanation. 77/100 WBR.

Nose: Dominated by sherry with an orange zest tang and some dark fruits, giving it good depth and richness. Taste: Quite complex for a 40% whisky, with spice, dark fruits, and a general sweetness; it tastes like Christmas. Finish: Medium length, with oak and spice notes. Overall, an excellent sherry-forward whisky that I happily revisit fairly often.

This is my second time reviewing this whisky. The more I taste it, the more I appreciate it. I'm increasing the score by 0.25. To achieve true excellence, it should have been bottled at 43% ABV. The cost wouldn't increase dramatically, and I would happily pay more for the added depth, complexity, and flair that the higher alcohol content would provide.
