GlenAllachie 4 Year Peated Single Malt (Billy Walker 50th Anniversary Future Edition)

Billy Walker is akin to royalty in whisky production. He has been crafting exceptional spirits for a considerable time. To be exact, he has been making whisky for 50 years. Presently, he owns one of the arguably finest distilleries globally, The GlenAllachie, which has earned that reputation due to this member of the whisky Hall of Fame. This provides the proper context for my upcoming review of the 4-year-old, "Future" expression from GlenAllachie. This is a peated single malt, a first for this distillery's history, honoring Billy Walker's 50th anniversary of creating the finest single malts in the world. Bottled at cask strength, 60.2% ABV, this very young whisky is quite captivating. On the nose, it's almost perfect. Smoked oranges, bacon, honey, BBQ sauce. Sausage, ribs, and a pleasant spiciness. It retains GlenAllachie's fruity profile while also offering an aromatic peat sensation. After a sip, the aroma shifts to notes resembling lotion for burnt skin, kerosene, and meat. Incredibly complex. The empty glass yielded some milky reminiscences. On the palate, it's pure perfection. Orange marmalade and chocolate. As you "chew" this dram, a powerful red hot chili sensation is released into your very being. Vanilla, toffee, and oranges are also present. The aftertaste is quite smoky! Tobacco, Cuban cigars, orange peels. It possesses a wonderful acidity. Hints of salt are detected. Overall, this was extraordinary, especially when one pauses to consider that this single malt is only 4 years old. It's named "Future" as part of the 50th Anniversary collection, which also includes two 16-year-old expressions: Past and Present. This represents a "wink" or an indication of the distillery's future direction. An amazing single malt, fitting to commemorate five decades of wonderful whisky making. My rating for it is 98 out of 100. Cheers!

(Good Spirits Co. Glasgow – Virtual Whisky Tasting, 08 October 2022). Nose: Sharp/spicy/alcoholic, notes of fruit and nuts, burnt wood, apple, hairspray, and peat. Palate: 'Hot' sensation, wet peat, toasted oak, nutty, toffee, and vanilla. Finish: A long finish with nutty notes, pipe smoke, damp peat, toffee, burnt wood, and a sweet, dry aftertaste. 160hr fermentation time 1 of 10,000 bottles (worldwide) Ex-rye, bourbon and virgin oak casks Intriguing, with a hot and somewhat numbing quality. Abundant peat and wood smoke. The layers are wonderfully varied. It's not necessarily an easy-drinking spirit, more of a thought-provoking "interesting" dram rather than one you'd repeatedly reach for. I would not have identified this as a GlenAllachie in a blind tasting; it lacks much of their typical character. It ranked second among the six samples, with 27% of the votes for favorite of the night. 80% of attendees indicated they enjoyed the whisky.

This definitely benefits from, and can handle, a lot of water. I have no problem drinking higher proof, cask strength whiskies, but occasionally encounter one that truly only shines with water. The aroma has smoke and red fruits, and neat it's just very rough and youthful. After adding water a second time, it rounded out and smoothed with much better integration of smoke and juicy red fruits, plus a hint of a savory note. Worth taking time with this one 👍
