Glenallachie 13 Year Old 2006 (Cask 1850 - Spirit of Speyside 2019)

A renowned Master Distiller is responsible for the celebrated Glendronach 18 and 21 expressions we've enjoyed for years. This legendary figure retired in 2016 after selling several distilleries but felt compelled to return. Now, at 77, he has earned Master Distiller of 2020 after acquiring a new distillery. Since then, this distillery has garnered numerous awards, including gold for its 10yo Batch Strength in consecutive years and recognition as Best Single Malt of the World by The World Whiskies Awards. The Master Distiller is the driving force behind these achievements. This 2019 release was exclusive to a specific festival and is a Single Cask Strength bottle, matured in a Port Pipe, with a high ABV and a deep copper hue. On the nose, remarkable complexity unfolds: Orange Caramel, mocha coffee, chocolate powder, cupcakes, marzipan, and tiramisu. After an initial taste, the aroma evolves to become more floral, with notes of chocolate, herbs, orange leaf, mint, passion fruit, and dulce de leche. The palate is exquisite, offering a multitude of experiences: Chocolate, pepper, red fruits, and oranges. A second tasting reveals more: orange chocolate, creamy cinnamon, and honey candy. A third tasting brings forth burnt sugar, brown sugar, crème brûlée, and dulce de leche. It's truly exceptional. The finish is nearly as perfect as the palate. Notes of orange leaf, pepper, some sulfuric hints, and salt. Chocolate, black tea, and melon. Burnt sugar and maple syrup. The profile is quite evident. Overall, the distillery's awards are well-earned. This is my third expression from them, and all have been outstanding. I am eager to explore more of this single malt, especially given the Master Distiller's expertise in cask selection. My rating for this exceptional whisky is a solid 96 out of 100.

Appearance: Amber with medium viscosity. Nose with water: Sweet (honey, vanilla, caramel, cotton candy) and fruity (sultanas, red apples, pears, peach), with notes of barley, a hint of vinegar, and damp oak. Palate with water: A balanced sweet and spicy arrival. I seem to have added the correct amount of spring water this time; the previous pour was a bit too sweet and bland for my liking. It's full, rich, oily, with prominent sweetness (honey, caramel, vanilla, sugar candy), fruity notes (strawberry, sultanas, red apples, peach), malted barley, walnuts, and oak. Finish: A long finish with a sweet, fruity, and nutty aftertaste. Overall: A good drink, but I was expecting a bit more excitement. It's an ideal drink for dessert pairings, so if this profile isn't to your taste, look elsewhere. I wonder if a certain reviewer commented on this bottle?
