Fukano Jikan

I appreciate Japan. Their meticulousness is admirable. Curiously, their spirits don't always hit the mark. Still, unlike inferior American and European spirits, even the least impressive Japanese whiskey commands respect due to its evident intentionality. It might not be my personal preference, but it undeniably reflects the distillery's vision. Considering this, I generally steer clear of Japanese whiskey, unless I find myself in a Japanese eatery, as is the case tonight. I spotted it on the shelf and decided to try it. It wasn't even listed on the drinks menu. My hope is that it's not priced at $75, though even at that, it would feel justified. A scent of vanilla and butterscotch tickles the senses, reminiscent of burying one's nose in a ponderosa pine. The taste is remarkably smooth, blurring the lines between scotch and bourbon. As notes of burnt caramel emerge, I lean towards bourbon, perhaps one finished in sherry casks. The finish could linger longer, but it's exceptionally mellow. I regret not having a bottle at home. This outstanding creation deserves the name "melatonin".

Light vanilla and floral notes on the nose. Palate starts with a bitter sweetness, not quite chocolate but close. Peppery and citrus finish that lingers in the mouth.

The aroma is light and caramel-like. It has a slight alcohol presence. Tastes of sweet plums.
