About this bottle

Despite a history of operation, at times intermittent, since 1824, Fettercairn remains relatively obscure, even among dedicated whisky enthusiasts. This particular bottling was introduced in the summer of 2010 as part of a rebranding initiative by its new proprietors. Fior, a Gaelic term signifying "true" or "pure," is a release without an age statement. It is a blend comprising a small proportion (15%) of young, intensely peated whisky combined with older (14 and 15 years) whiskies produced through more conventional methods. Maturation occurs in first-fill ex-bourbon casks, and it is bottled at 84 proof.

Opal Boston 4.0

This is the second spirit at my new local whisky bar. The nose immediately brings toffee, reminding me of Glendronach 15. The taste is quite good. It has a viscous mouthfeel and is hard to discern beyond toffee. It finishes hot for 42% ABV, but it's not bad at all for under $60 USD per bottle. It's definitely my kind of whisky. If I had to describe it, I'd call it a budget Glendronach 15. This isn't a criticism, as it's a different price point and I enjoy it. It just lacks flavor depth, and the alcohol balance is slightly off. A high 3 out of 5, rounding up to a 4 for value.

Felix Boone 4.0

Deep, dark appearance. Aromas of toasted sugar and malt are detected. The mouthfeel has a bit of smoke and considerable spicy sweetness, approaching rum-like notes. The smoke persists on the palate, leaving a dry, woody sensation.
