You know how "the king of wines" is Barolo? Well, there's a "Queen of Wines" too: Barbaresco, Barolo's sister. Both are made from nebbiolo, a grape that grows in the fog of Piedmont, Italy. This single malt was fully matured by Edradour in ex-Barbaresco casks and bottled after 12 years at 48.2% ABV. On the nose, it begins with latex, water balloons, tropical punch, and gooseberries, mostly farm fruits with a very floral character. The palate is very light and winey, with farm fruits, milk chocolate, and spices. It feels like accidentally swallowing water from a water balloon. The aftertaste is different: tobacco, chili, and cigarettes, very rich. Overall, this wasn't close to the Barolo Cask from Edradour. It's a fine, enjoyable dram, but it felt very light and gentle. Perhaps too gentle for me, as I prefer whiskies with more impact. A good dram, but not my favorite Edradour. My score is 88 out of 100.
