Matthew Long 4.5

I'm constantly seeking out limited edition whiskies, independent bottlings from cherished distilleries, and of course, attractive packaging that captivates through its marketing. During one such quest, I discovered this 9-year-old "Laffrodite," a name combining the Goddess of Love with Laphroaig, amusingly. It's a blended malt, bottled by Cask Viking, a company founded in 2020, at 58.5% ABV. The aroma is unmistakably Laphroaig, reminiscent of a fresh can of tennis balls, mop water, gunpowder, red chili, pepper, and the scent of an opened first aid kit. It carries notes of socks and a hint of blood, alongside fudge and dulce de leche. There's also toffee and a spongy nerf toy, all very characteristic of Laphroaig. On the palate, it's even more Laphroaig-like, incredibly potent, like unleashing napalm on your tongue. A very strong red chili and toffee are present. The finish delivers a peaty punch to the face, with notes of swamp, honey, green tea, and ashes. In summary, this is a whisky to be savored on a Monday evening after a demanding day, or perhaps even on a Monday morning during a challenging workday. It's powerful and astonishing, possibly lacking some complexity but making up for it with intense sensations. My rating is a solid 93 out of 100; it truly resonated with me.
