There's an old Shaolin kung fu style called "Drunken Fist," which sounds like a good starting point for me learning martial arts. I mention this because my latest whisky review is a Caol Ila Drunken Master. This is an extremely limited bottling, with only 108 decanters ever produced. A 9-year-old, cask strength Caol Ila from a single hogshead, presented with a beautiful label. It's 53.2% ABV. The nose is intensely peaty. Gooseberries, smoke, povidone, and charred pineapple. It smells just like the government-mandated cricket fumigation near my home. Herbal, with meaty notes like pancetta. Guava and pineapple marmalade. Sweetness meets peat. After a sip, smoky and swampy notes emerged; damp earth and humidity. It became very maritime. The palate is absolutely stunning. Vanilla blends with pineapple and peat. It's remarkably spicy. It begins sweet, like an "Alfajor," then the spiciness arrives, akin to chili with fire. Incredible. The finish is perfect yet incredibly potent. It starts with a "camareta" explosion (camareta is the most powerful firework available), feeling like hell unleashed in your mouth, but in a good way, lol. Ashtray and strong mint. It electrifies your soul. Overall, this is by far one of the finest Caol Ila expressions I've ever experienced. Intense, complex, and brimming with flavor. I need to find another for my collection, but this might be an impossible quest since only 108 were made. My rating for this remarkable single malt is 96 out of 100.
